ALGARVE, only 290 kms (180 miles) south of Lisbon, offers soft golden sandy beaches with natural rock formations throughout the coast, water as warm as the Mediterranean but with a touch of the bracing Atlantic. You can find a variety of small towns, such as:
Albufeira, where the Moorish influence is abundantly obvious;
Portimão, the famous fishing village where dozen of boats unload their catch of tuna and sardines;
Sagres, famous for its school of Navigation, where Henry the Navigator, who never sailed, taught the art of Navigation
Faro, the capital city of Algarve since the middle of the 16th century.
Faro was liberated from the dominant Moors in 1249 and a bronze statue in the main square, honours King Afonso III who led the conquering Christian forces. The names, structures and colours of the area are all characteristic of North African cultural tradition.
